If your old furniture seems to be an utter mess, you may be tempted to replace it. However, why not repurpose it rather? With a few simple materials, creativity, and elbow grease, you can transform ugly or dated furniture into refreshed, upgraded items you’ll enjoy. There are numerous essential methods to give practically any piece of furniture in your home a complete makeover! Here are a few of our favorite ideas for repurposing and updating old furniture.
Dress(er) it Up
That worn-out vintage dresser may not be your most significant piece of furniture in the bedroom. Instead, why not repurpose it as a credenza or TV stand? Take out all of the drawers, sand, and repaint – inside and out. Select any paint color you want – don’t be scared to go bold with a crisp white, cheerful red, or deep blue. You could remove the lower drawers and replace them with beautiful baskets to construct a lovely accent table. Alternatively, remove all the drawers to produce a TV stand with open storage.
Add Life to a Tired Table
Coffee tables, side tables, and kitchen tables can all begin to seem beat-up and dusty eventually. However, tables are one of the simplest pieces of furniture to makeover. One of the quickest strategies to give your old table a new lease of life is to paint it a fresh new color. But if painting isn’t your thing, why not transform that unpleasant table into an upholstered bench or settee? You could simply make extra seating from a coffee table or side table with fabric and cotton fill. Just make sure it’s made of solid wood. Why not give a new surface on top of the old one for kitchen tables? Some lovely stenciling, some contact paper, or a glass top could all give new life and loveliness to a worn-out old table.
Along with your table, your dining chairs might benefit from a makeover, as well. If you have good-quality wood chairs, you can easily sand and repaint them any color you like for a brand new look. And don’t worry about matching the table exactly; a table and chairs in contrasting or complementary colors can be a charming addition to any kitchen or dining room.
A New Twist on Shelving
Bring to mind the drawers you took out during your dresser makeover. Why not convert them into hanging shelves for a charming, rustic look? Dresser drawers can be lined with nice-looking contact paper, then hung against a wall and filled with your favorite knickknacks. If your drawers have antique hardware attached, even greater! Try hanging several drawers together with the hardware reaching in several directions.
Reface and Replace
For cabinets of all types, one approach to upgrade a plain design is to add new doors. Removing the doors on a cabinet is relatively simple. At that time, sand and repaint the entire piece. You can acquire doors pre-made from numerous hardware stores or add new elements to the old ones. Another inventive approach would be to replace part of the cabinet door with glass. There are so several artistic options – what you do with that cabinet is all up to you!
Upgraded Garden Seating
Don’t forget that your outside furniture may want a makeover, as well! If you’ve got good quality patio furniture that’s just unclean, all you have to do is sand and paint the pieces and then add new cushions. That quickly, your patio set will look brand new! Otherwise, turn an old headboard into a charming garden bench! You may no longer want to use that old bed, but if you take the headboard, add a seating box, and then paint the whole thing in your chosen shade, you’ve created a pretty new place to rest and enjoy the outdoors.
